1) Alfalfa is one of the most glyphosate-heavy crops. It is incredibly high in arsenic. Anything with heavy metals and toxins is going to be disruptive to your sick horse’s immune system. Coming from a person who loves alfalfa, that’s a hard pill to swallow, I know!
2) Commercial feeds use “synthetics”. Whole foods deliver real, bioavailable nutrients not made in a lab. Horses were made to eat real, whole foods….just like us.
3) Paste dewormers aren’t working against parasite resistance. They are also filled with additives such as parabens and toxins that aren’t safe for horses. Read all the inactive ingredients. Can’t find them? It’s because they were intentionally hidden. (Consider liquid dewormer instead.)
4) Most pro and prebiotic supplements are further disrupting the delicate microbiome balance and wreaking havoc on the hind gut. Most have sucrose and dextrose as the first ingredient.
5) Most magnesium supplemented isn’t the ideal type, and is synthetic.
6) Many horses are getting way too much iron because of imbalanced diets, commercial feed and supplements.
7) If your horse isn’t getting better, it may not be the drug of choice causing the issue. Most of the time when horses aren't getting better with treatment, it is the management and rehab program and a matter of finding what works best for that horse. Sure, not all drugs or protocols are created equal; but nutrition and management are just as important.
8 ) If you don’t keep the manure away from your horse’s mouth through adequate rotational grazing or great facility management practices, he is going to have more chances of reexposure to parasites. Keep stalls clean and manure piles covered in barn lime, DE, etc as much as possible. Poop IS part of the problem.
9) Your horse’s hind gut is likely a war zone right now. Healing the hind gut is imperative to your horse’s recovery.
Think “root causes”, and no, it isn’t the opossum. If you consider the bigger picture, and dial in your horse’s management program, supporting the horse systemically, and getting away from mainstream practices that are making the horse sick, you WILL start to see progress and it will only help your horse.
I have never had someone come back to me and tell me this info didn’t help their horse.
You’re likely here because you have a sick horse and are seeking answers where vets, mainstream medicine, etc aren’t working for your horse.
“Open mind, and open heart.”That’s the real secret to overcoming EPM.
It’s worth considering.
